As knitwear fanatics, it's no surprise that we look forward to Winter every year. Our design office is based in Melbourne which, along with 4 seasons in a day,  guarantee's some very chilly months. In saying this though, a few of us are sun bunnies at heart. As we say goodbye to the last remaining days of Spring we thought it best to put together a list of fun things to do during the Winter season.  So whether you live here or plan on visiting we hope you can enjoy at least a few of these things! It should come as no surprise that getting out your cashmere is at the top of this list...

Mia Fratino's Guide to Winter in Melbourne

1. Bring out the cashmere!

Or any knitwear for that matter. Melbourne's Winter's are known for being temperamental. Luckily, cashmere will keep you warm rain, hail or shine. So before you head out to enjoy all Melbourne has to offer we recommend giving your Winter wardrobe a refresh.

2. Head to an AFL game

It's probably one of the most quintessentially Melbourne things you can do and it's what many of us look forward to during Winter. There's nothing quite like sitting in a large stadium with a buzzing atmosphere and a fancy plastic cup of wine or beer. Both Marvel and the MCG are located within close proximity to the CBD, so you it's easy to make a day out of it.

3. Winter Night Market

The Winter Night Market at the QVM is an event not to be missed. Incorporating a mix of entertainment, delicious food, delectable drinks and even Christmas in July  the Winter Market may just become a regular spot for you. Aft er all, Melbourne is known for it's food so take this opportunity to experience the range on offer. The Winter Market currently runs from the 1st of June to the 3rd of August and is free entry.

4. Igloo's!

This is one I'll definitely be trying...

The Wharf Hotel has relaunched its Winter Igloo Garden situated along the Yarra River. You can enjoy food with up to 8 friends in these super cosy igloo's while admiring the stars above (or the Yarra...)

5. Quite literally escape the cold with an escape room

If the weather starts to get a bit too cold and you want to remain indoors, Escape Rooms are a fantastic way to warm up both your body and brain. They're a whole new way of storytelling and involve groups working together to literally escape a themed room through solving puzzles & riddles. We find these are most enjoyable when you get a big group together and make an event out of it.

6. Off the beaten track

If you're looking for a super cute farm gate, we recommend visiting our friends over at Bellevue Farm Gate. Once the orchard’s workshop, the space has been lovingly repurposed retaining a rustic atmosphere amongst the apple trees and our working orchard.

Wander around the shop filled with fresh apples, award winning Summer Snow juices and Trattore ciders all made at the orchard. They proudly sell products that are local, Victorian and always 100% Australian.

7. A trip to the snow

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending who you ask) it doesn't snow in the inner city. As much as I'd love to wake up and make a snow angel it just isn't possible. If you're a bit of a ski bunny or love to get out your snowboard there is ample opportunity at Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek (just to name a few). If you head to Mt Buller be sure to pop in and say hi to our friends at Snowfox Boutique or stop in at Basic B on your way up the mountain.

8. Head to the hot springs

Warm up your bones or go for an ice cold dip... although in the middle of Winter we can't imagine a cold dip is appealing. While there are many hot springs throughout Melbourne, we speak from experience when we say the Peninsula Hot Springs offers the largest variety. If you're less inclined to soak in a hot spring you can try one of the sauna's or take relaxation to a whole other level with their spa treatments.
